Halls Redevelopment THIS WEEK’s News – Questions and Answers

Why is there such a delay in finishing? Basically, up to Christmas, all ran on time as the CLT was put up and the roof made good. The main exterior work of Lime Render required a few days of min 5°C to allow for it to cure. The cold weather with temperatures consistently below 5°C lasted from December to March, so you can see how the exterior work has delayed completion.

What has been going on then? Interior work has proceeded apace and if we could look round the inside we would be amazed at how much progress has been made.

Is the delay all about weather?  There was a delay early on when asbestos was found and had to be removed. Jeakins Weir was well on the way to catching up the two week delay this caused when sadly the weather hit. A consequence of weather delays is that sub-contractors/supplies are put on hold and then rescheduled once progress can be made again. This challenge is being managed well by Ashley and his team.

Is there good news to report? Yes, the interior is coming together really well. The exterior lime render is complete and the exterior ground work can at last commence as more scaffolding has been taken down. It’s great to actually begin to see what the new buildings will look like. We will now be able to see further exterior progress, just as there has been unseen interior progress.

Any other good news? Yes, there is: it still looks increasingly likely that we shall not exceed our £2.5 million budget. HRG and our consultants are continuing to work hard to minimise possible risks to bring the cost in within our budget.

How are we preparing for the use of our new halls and rooms? There are 2 groups working hard. The Fit Out Team (FOT) is preparing how to furnish the complex properly for 21st century use; and the Halls Usage Group is looking at policies, hire agreements & space usage. Also Laura Turpie, Chair of HRG/FOT, has obtained confirmation from our existing hirers of their desire to return to the new spaces and their agreement to the new hire charges as prepared by RIG and approved by PCC.

Are we there financially? No, not yet. We still need to pray that those who have not given recently or at all would donate, if able to. In addition, the Grants Group under Ken Barber has begun one last trawl of possible grant-making bodies – if you can help make phone calls of enquiry, talk to Ken.

Halls Redevelopment THIS WEEK’s News – Good news, which you can see best if you walk down Denmark Street, where the scaffolding has come down. Great work has been done inside – it’s beginning to look and feel like the halls and rooms we envisaged.

The north lawn has lost some trees, which opens up the visibility of the church to the street, and offers us a more usable space for outdoor events and hospitality.

We are progressing towards the fulfilment of God’s vision to help us be more in the centre of our community, more visible to our community and more able to share God’s love with our community.

Completion remains August, followed by about 4 weeks to fit out for actual daily use. There is still a 6 figure sum to receive so that all the costs will be paid. Donations and Standing Orders still need; please place in a sealed envelope, marked HRV, in the Collection Basket, or drop through Vicarage letterbox (115 Denmark Street) ASAP. HRV pledge/donation forms at church.
